Huawei prepared back-up OS if blocked from US-built software

Mubasher: Amid the intense political pressure heaped on Huawei, the Chinese giant has prepared a back-up plan for the likely event of losing access to US-made software.

The world’s second biggest tech company, built its own operating system (OS) for smartphones and computers in case it is blocked from US software from Microsoft and Google, CNBC reported, citing an interview with Huawei’s consumer division CEO Richard Yu.

“We have prepared our own operating system. Should it ever happen that we can no longer use these systems, we would be prepared,” Yu told German publication Die Welt. Later, the remarks were confirmed to CNBC by a spokesperson of the company.

“That’s our plan B, [but] of course we prefer to work with the ecosystems of Google and Microsoft,” he said.

A new operating system could be a problem for Huawei especially if prompted to use software by both of the US tech giants, outside China.

While the Chinese government already blocks the access to Google services, its app store is available worldwide.

Huawei has been under intense scrutiny from the US, on allegations that its equipment could be accessed by Chinese government for spying purposes.

Intelligence experts pointed to domestic laws that seemed to require firms to provide help to the government in intelligence gathering, if asked to do so, according to CNBC.
